Starfish frange grows in autumn in groups or “witch rings”. Predominantly on litter on alkaline soil under coniferous and deciduous trees.

From August to autumn, it grows in deciduous and coniferous forests. Since the fruits do not decompose with difficulty, old specimens can be found throughout the year.

The fruiting body initially develops in the ground. Later, the three-layer rigid shell breaks and (due to different absorption of water) diverges to the sides. Individual blades begin to twist as the fruiting body emerges from the ground.

The inner part resembles the fruiting body of a raincoat: round, without a stem, enclosed in a paper-thin shell, inside which spores ripen; later they come out through the opening at the top.

The pulp is hard. The taste and smell are inexpressive.

Mushroom for food. Occurs rarely.
